POTENSI SMFC DALAM PENGOLAHAN AIR LIMBAH DOMESTIK: EFISIENSI PENGHILANGAN LOGAM DAN PRODUKSI LISTRIK

Peningkatan pencemaran lingkungan mendorong upaya intensif dalam pengelolaan air limbah, meskipun metode yang ada sering kali memerlukan investasi biaya yang substansial. Sebagai alternatif yang menjanjikan secara ekonomis dan efisien, Sediment Microbial Fuel Cell (SMFC) telah diteliti sebagai sistem bioelektrokimia yang dapat menghilangkan kontaminan dari air limbah domestik dan menghasilkan energi listrik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi potensi SMFC dalam pengolahan air limbah domestik melalui analisis efisiensi penghilangan logam serta produksi energi listrik. Eksperimen dilakukan menggunakan sampel air limbah domestik dari permukiman di Jalan Bitoa Lama, Borong, Kecamatan Manggala, Makassar, serta sedimen dari Sungai Tallo, Makassar. SMFC dirancang menggunakan silinder PVC dengan elektroda karbon seluas 15,5744 cm², dengan anoda ditempatkan di zona sedimen dan katoda di zona air limbah domestik. Operasi SMFC dilakukan dalam mode tegangan rangkaian terbuka selama 240 jam pada suhu lingkungan (25°C - 30°C), dengan analisis kualitas air limbah mengacu pada parameter logam Fe dan Mn sesuai standar nasional Indonesia (SNI). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan efisiensi penghilangan logam sebesar 78,06% untuk Fe dan 61,73% untuk Mn, sementara kinerja energi listrik SMFC diamati melalui densitas daya tertinggi mencapai 0,0313 W/m² selama periode pengamatan. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa SMFC memiliki potensi sebagai metode pengolahan air limbah domestik yang tidak hanya efisien dan ekonomis, tetapi juga dapat berkontribusi dalam penghasilan energi listrik tambahan sebagai nilai tambahnya
